A Fox & Chave silk tie with a repeat pattern of zebras over a powder blue ground.
This design is derived from a painting by Ustad Mansur, the leading court painter of nature, of a Zebra that was presented to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (1569-1627) by Mir Ja'far who had acquired it from Turks travelling from Ethiopia, and was described on the painting by Jahangir himself as a 'mule'.
The animal was shown to Jahangir at the Persian New Year festival of Nowruz, in 1621, and once he was certain it wasn't simply a horse someone had painted stripes upon, he offered it as a gift to Shah Abbas of Iran, with whom he often exchanged rare or exotic items.
This particular tie is a favourite of King Charles III, who has often been pictured wearing it to functions and on tours of the United Kingdom and internationally.
