Fox & Chave silk tie featuring a repeat of Scottish thistles over a dark blue ground.
The thistle has been an important symbol of Scottish heraldry for over 500 years, and represents one of the country's orders of chivalry. The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon an individual by the monarch of Scotland, currently the British monarch.
The order was established in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland (James II of England) to recognise and reward Scottish peers and knights who displayed exceptional loyalty and service to the crown. The order's insignia features a green enamel St Andrew's Cross (the national symbol of Scotland) surmounted by a gold thistle and surrounded by an elaborate collar.
The Thistle is the national flower of Scotland and can be seen everywhere from the strip of the international rugby team, on football clubs, local businesses, major organisations and corporations, to the uniforms of police officers.
The thistle also appears on the 5 pence coin, and some versions of the £1 coin in the United Kingdom.
